Program Notes
Aerial Navigation is based on an extended technique for trumpet, in which the trumpet player inserts his mute, removes his second slide, and quotes Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee. As a result, certain notes become un-muted, while others remain muted, which produces the groovy rhythm and shaky tonality upon which the rest of the piece is based.
