Instrumentation: Symphonic Winds
Duration: 6 minutes
Year Composed: 2021
Clarpnos was originally conceived for five clarinets and piano. Though I loved the music and the timbre of the ensemble, there were serious playability issues with five instruments playing one million notes. Additionally, the piece is a gigantic, sweeping wall of sound that did not reach its potential within the small chamber ensemble. Re-writing this piece for symphonic winds easily fixed both of those issues, and it took on a massive sound of its own. To honor the original timbre of the clarinet choir and piano that I fell in love with, both instrument sets are still heavily featured in this work.
