Program Notes

Sonata for a Doubler is written for one person doubling on Saxophone, Clarinet, and Flute, with Piano accompaniment. Though the piece is written in an arc form, it is reminiscent of a sonata. The saxophone part acts as the first theme, the clarinet part as the contrasting second theme, and the flute part as the development. The constant eighth note, and the shifting of motives within that eighth-note pulse, are ideas inspired by African drumming rhythms.
