Spirits

Program Notes

Spirits, a three-movement work for two Bb Clarinets and String Quartet, was at first influenced by jazz idioms, such as slides and swing. As the piece evolved, I began to incorporate elements from other musical traditions, such as the rapid timbre changes from bebop improvisation, and the changing meter of Bulgarian wedding music. Each movement focuses on one of these influences.
